Paris Metro line 5 links Bobigny - Pablo Picasso and Place d'Italie, running through the east of the city. Between Quai de la Rapée and Gare d'Austerlitz, it crosses the River Seine above ground on the Austerlitz Viaduct, with a direct view over the river.

Description of Line 5 of the Paris Metro:
- Opened on 2 June 1906 (first section between Place d'Italie and Gare d'Austerlitz).
- Termini: Bobigny - Pablo Picasso and Place d'Italie.
- Number of stations: 22.
- Length: about 14.6 km (9.1 miles).
- End-to-end travel time: about 34 minutes.
- Highlight: crosses the Seine on the Austerlitz Viaduct (built 1903-1904 by the Société de Construction de Levallois-Perret, former Gustave Eiffel workshops).
- Colour on the map: orange.

- Key interchanges: Gare du Nord (lines 4 and 5, RER B/D/E and Transilien trains), Gare de l'Est (lines 4, 5, 7), République (lines 3, 5, 8, 9, 11), Bastille (lines 1, 5, 8), Gare d'Austerlitz (lines 5, 10 and RER C), Stalingrad (lines 2, 5, 7).
- Ourcq is one of the stations on Line 5 that has kept the "Ouï-dire" architectural style.
- Line 5 passes near several places of interest such as the Place de la République, the Bastille Opera, and notable parks such as the Parc de la Villette and the Parc des Buttes Chaumont.
- Approaching Gare d'Austerlitz (from Quai de la Rapée), Line 5 crosses the Seine on the Viaduc d'Austerlitz (listed as a historic monument since 1986) and then runs under the glass canopy above the station tracks.
- The line was gradually extended and did not reach its current northern terminal until 1985.
